The effect of hCG injection on serum and seminal plasma testosterone in Ghezel ram

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Reproductive system is affected by hormones so we can control livestock reproduction process by using synthetic hormones and use maximum of their reproductive capacity. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hCG injection on serum and seminal plasma testosterone. METHODS: In this study, six 3-4 years old Ghezel rams were used. Rams was studied with an injection of 500 IU hCG hormone in reproductive season and hCG injection were repeated every seven days for 9 weeks. Blood samples were taken before injections and 30, 60 and 90 minutes after intramuscular injection of hCG from jugular vein. Ejaculate samples were collected at a distance of zero, 1 and 7 days after injection of hCG and serum and seminal plasma testosterone were determined by using ELISA kits. RESULTS: The results showed that hCG injections increased testosterone levels in seminal plasma and serum that serum testosterone levels at 90 minutes after injection of hCG reached to peak, but between 30 and 60 minutes after injection had the greatest increase. Seminal plasma testosterone levels reached the peak value 1 day after injection but 7 days after injection was reduced and close to the base. CONCLUSIONS: As a result, hCG injections can improve reproductive traits by increasing serum testosterone.
